CiviNovus acts in four spheres as part of our work. These spheres are:
- The Academic and Professional Learning Sphere
- The Social Business Sphere
- The Living Social Lab Sphere
- The Sharing through Showcasing Sphere
In the academic sphere we explore the building of a knowledge based social innovation ecosystem primarily by discovering, validating, beneficiating and disseminating information, knowledge and experience.
We action this within the spaces related to the School of Social Innovation at Hugenote Kollege.
These spaces include, amongst others, our PhD fellowship group, the PhD Athenaeum, the School of Social Innovation and our work in the Center for Good Governance in Africa. Primarily we involve ourselves with education, training, research and service in this sphere. Our 4 day executive short courses focusing on Leadership for Social Innovation topics are popular and empowering experiential personal competency and institutional capacity building initiatives in this sphere.
In the social business sphere we incubate, accelerate, partner lead and manage and consult to social innovation initiatives, social businesses and our living social labs. We do this as the CiviNovus Social Business. We are currently involved with a number of these activities, including Bellville Information Technology, Ligstad, Bellville, South African Business Resources Initiative, BADISA and numerous related social business partners.
In the living social lab sphere we co-create and support living social labs to innovatively build prototype solutions to complex societal problems through using social innovation methods and solutions and reflective practice based learning. We have built social labs in Saldanha Municipality, Hessequa Municipality, Mosselbaai Municipality and Prince Albert Municipaliy in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. We prototyped in partnerships a solar delineation plant in Witsand on the Cape Indian Ocean, fibre to the home municipal solutions in Saldanha Bay on the Cape Atlantic Ocean and bespoke tourism, health and agricultural solution for local development in all of the municipal jurisdictions we have worked with. An interesting iteration of a virtual living social lac is our plastic waste open innovation competition where community solutions are co-created in cooperation with the actors creating and holding the solutions for plastic waste.
In the sharing through showcasing sphere we organise and facilitate learning journeys for international and local groups to share our programmes and projects and the learning opportunities with those who join us on experiential learning journeys which are organised over periods of from 1 to 14 days. These journeys are carefully designed to suit the needs of each group of professionals in their areas of expertise and experience with leadership learning as sustained focus. Our clients include RABO Bank in the Netherlands, the Tilburg University Business School, TIAS and Nijenrode Business School in the Netherlands as well as travel agency facilitated private groups. Our journeys are universally excellently rated by the "journeypeople" joining and sharing with us.
